If you have had radiation to the pelvis, your health care provider may have suggested a vaginal dilator to help improve the elasticity of your vagina. Radiation to the pelvic area often results in a narrowing or shortening of the vagina with decreased blood circulation and vaginal laxity. Scar tissue also forms and it can seal the sides of the vagina together. The tissue is dry and dense. This often results in painful intercourse.
A vaginal dilator is a smooth cylinder similar to a tampon (that comes in various widths). Regular use of a dilator (or vibrator) can help break down scar tissue, prevent scar tissue from building up, increase circulation, and prevent the narrowing of the vagina.
